Dear Mother: West Sandling,March 25th, 1917 The Canadian mail came in during the week and I received a letter from you besides a cheque for L4, 1sh. 6d which I guess is Carman’s assigned pay. I will see about its disbursement if I get a chance. I was busy writing letters when we were surprised by the order that everybody is C.B. - that is no one can leave the camp and we are all ready to move off at half an hour’s notice. All kinds of wild rumours are afloat. Some of them are that the German fleet is out, there is an air raid to be executed, there is trouble in Ireland and what it is no one know but in the meantime we have to "stand to" in readiness for any emergency. I got three budgets of papers addressed in Rae’s handwriting. They are a treat to one so far away from home. I don’t know what the morrow may bring forth but am going to scribble a note which I may and will possible follow with a letter. In the meantime I have no opportunity to write interestingly. Have heard from Carman and Bill Buchanan lately. They are well. Am now sporting a kilt but have it packed and am wearing pants again. Jimmie is away in Ayr on 6 day’s leave. He was lucky to get it and went in full Highland costume. I enclose a couple of photos which do not by any means do me justice but I submit them for your approval and criticism nonetheless. I am well and have been working pretty hard for a musketry instructor. Many of the sergeants have been reduced to private and so far I have escaped, but of course I can soldier just as well in one capacity as another. I got letters from Steve, one from Bailie, one from Edith, one form Jack McNabb telling me all the news of Dungannon and the lodge. A new rumour is that they are pushing through the enemy’s lines in France very successfully and that all "A" category men, like myself, may soon find ourselves on our way there soon but don’t worry. All men on leave are being recalled to their units and there seems to be something stirring somewhere, but don’t worry, I will keep you informed as far as possible. There is no use of becoming pessimistic. It doesn’t look as if the Germans can hold out successfully much longer and they are liable to try and dodge their ferocity can concoct and we must be "Aye ready". Love from Cannon.
